In September 2024 I started working on the idea of creating live music for the classic film Vampyr by Carl T. Dreyer. For this project, which I presented live from October to December, I used a mixture of repetitive pre-recorded phrases, some leitmotivs and improvisation. I wrote the first of the pieces included in this album to promote the film, and it was from that point that I began to see the potential of creating a group of compositions developed on the top of short repetitive rhythmic ideas, putting the main emphasis on simplicity and atmospheric coloring. With the exception of the aforementioned She must not die and Scales, which I composed in summer and autumn 2024, all the other pieces included here have been written and recorded in January 2025. The last piece, Tempestuous Meteorological Conditions, includes a brief quote of the well-known song Stormy Weather, by Harold Arlen. Besides writing the music, I played guitar and keyboard in this album and also did the cover, as usually.

The origin of the material that is included in this album is in the time I was living in a historical building called Persian Courtyard in the city of Astrakhan in November and December 2023. The name comes from its construction by a Persian merchant in the nineteenth century, and its peculiar architecture and atmosphere keep this mysterious building as a microcosm in the center of the city.

In December 2023 there was a delay in the production of Seaorm's album "Nekyia", and to make the wait more enjoyable, and back home in Spain and still immersed in the mood of my days at the Persian Courtyard, I decided to write new music with that inspiration, and in twelve days the music that integrates most of this album emerged and it appeared in an embryonic way as a digital download album in January 2024.

Unlike in my previous works in which the guitar is the instrument I used to compose the music, in this album I used samples of the well-known Mellotron keyboard, which I thought matched well with the character of the work. The music went through different phases, including an arrangement for string quartet and guitar that we did epically live in Astrakhan in February, and of which the main role that the viola has on this album remained (Anna Anshakova plays regularly in the Orchestra of the Opera and Ballet Theater). In Spain we added a rhythm section with the collaboration of Avelino Saavedra, who has participated in some of my solo albums and with October Equus, and after including several more compositions, the album took its definitive form.

For the artwork of this album I have used collages that I have created from photographs that I took at the Persian courtyard and frames from old silent movies that I like, instead of the usual illustrations that I usually paint for my albums. This is, briefly, the story of this album.

This group of compositions is inspired by the beautiful and detailed drawings that Frederic Norden made in Egypt and published in his book Voyage d'Egypte et de Nubie. Frederic Louis Norden (22 October 1708 – 22 September 1742) was a Danish naval captain, cartographer, and archaeological explorer. To my surprise, in his book he describes, and draws, a fourth great pyramid on the esplanade of Giza of which there is currently no trace or any historical record. This idea excited my imagination and the music I present here began to appear.

On the technical side, I have a love-hate relationship with the Roland VG88 guitar processor. Over the years I have owned and sold four units: I like their ability to obtain unique sounds and I am not so sure about the digital emulations of guitars and amplifiers (when this device appeared on the market, in the early 90s I think, the emulation technology was in its infancy). Coincidentally one of these devices fell into my hands again and I have created the music of this album inspired by its sounds, which give the colorful that I think goes well with this exotic themed suite. All sounds heard here are produced by the aforementioned device except for additional reverb and the radio receiver (from the BBC archives) in Whispering old corridors. / Ángel Ontalva

This collection of songs is based on sketches that I have been gathering in the last two years in various circumstances: many I wrote during my travels in 2019, in rented rooms, hotels, in general places where I always had my luggage ready and, perhaps for that reason, the feeling of the impending goodbye permeates the songs frequently; Others appeared in 2020 during the long months of confinement in which I observed with disbelief that little seemed stable in life really was, and some more arrived in the last days, during the recording process.

Two songs, however, date back to 2018 and I frequently performed them live, Broken trust, broken promises and Without a trace. I never recorded them properly and they fit well with the spirit of the album, so I decided to include them in this suite.

All the songs are recorded between January 28 and February 6, 2021, with the exception of By chance, which I recorded in April 2019, and I always knew, in August 2020.
